Private Networks:
Building a Communication Infrastructure
The Challenge:
AM General, LLC was faced with building a new 630,000 square foot assembly plant in Mishawaka, Indiana to assemble the HUMMER® H2 sport utility vehicles for General Motors. The plant's communication infrastructure had to support a vast array of critical systems including a data network, telephone, door access, CCTV, fire alarm, wireless network, wireless tracker system, and a local broadcast video system. The infrastructure connected the new plant, six perimeter buildings, and the existing HUMMER H1 assembly plant.

The AFL Telecommunications Solution:
AFL Telecommunications Private Network's product solutions were used to establish the combination star and partial ring backbone system for the communications network within the new facility - as well as to provide the links back to the original HUMMER H1 operations. AFL products used to complete the system included:

Loose Tube Cabling
Indoor/Outdoor Cables
Tight Buffered Indoor Cabling
Patch & Splice panels
Connectors & Connectorized Assemblies
Fusion Splicers
Test & Inspection equipment

AFL also provided panel systems, pre-loaded with terminated assemblies and design guidance on the bandwidth performance (and systems compatibility) of the hybrid fiber cabling solution utilizing both single-mode and 62.5/125mm multimode fibers.

Pre-loading of the terminated assemblies aided in the deployment of this network saving time and money by using AFL fusion splicers to integrate the connectorized ends quickly and effectively into the network. Test results on the factory terminated assemblies and cables were combined with final field-testing using our Noyes test and measurement equipment.
