District Five Schools in Spartanburg County are receiving Science Screen Report through the sponsorship of AFL Telecommunications, a local telecommunications manufacturer. An innovative videotape series, Science Screen Report is used in high schools and middle schools to enhance science education, to provide information about careers in science and technology, and to interest students in further related education.
The seven program series is produced yearly and covers topics related to science, technology, the environment and medicine. Video courses for the 2005/2006 school year include:
• Volcanic Prediction offers a look at safer ways to research volcanic activity.
• Defending Against Bacterial Diseases explores the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria.
• Colonizing Space describes how humans have begun to prepare for living in space.
• Pushing the Limits of the Human Body takes a look at three examples of humans pushing the limits of their bodies in the modern world.
• Light Machines - Photonic Devices of the Future explores the development of photonic devices to replace electronics in microprocessors.
• Bizarre Creatures Discovered explores the peculiarities of some rarely seen sea creatures, focusing on their intriguing adaptations to their individual environments.
• The Quest for 'Free' Energy asks the question: can we get energy out of nothing? This explores the idea of a perpetual motion machine.
Science Screen Report is an award winning, educational videotape series produced for secondary schools with guidance from a panel of dedicated educators.
The sponsorship was made possible through a company donation by Fujikura Ltd. of Japan, the parent company of AFL Telecommunications.
