History of the Giving Spirit
Fujikura’s philanthropy dates back to 1919 where the “Fujikura Campus” was established for children with mental disabilities. Built on Izu Oshima Island, the land and building for the school was donated by Mr. Nakauchi, Fujikura's managing director. Years later, Fujikura established another campus for mentally and physically disabled citizens in a different city.
These schools are still supported by Fujikura today; not only financially by Fujikura's employees, but also by members of Fujikura’s workforce often volunteer there as well.
In addition, baseball has contributed to society in Japan as well. With baseball being the most popular sport in Japan (amateur more so than professional), Mr. Fujikura’s successor, Mr. Matsumoto, loved baseball so much that he formed his own baseball team in an attempt to raise employee health and welfare and the cooperative spirit of employees. According to Mr. Matsumoto, "the cooperative spirit" makes "power of success," not only for business but also for the company.
As a result, Fujikura won the 1939 and 1939 championships at the national amateur baseball tournament in Japan. Many Fujikura employees participated in a fiery cheering team at the final competition during those years. Thanks to the baseball team, Fujikura became well known by the public and the employees' unity was strengthened.
